Okay I was going to post this before when I talked about Old Main, but I didn’t. So here it is. This is from www.answers.com/topic/eastern-illinois-university. I found this out a few years ago when taking Marni to theatre camp at Northern and it is really interesting.
The first building was finished in 1899 and is known as Old Main. Built of Indiana limestone in a heavy Gothic revival style with turrets, towers, and battlements, its distinctive outline is the official symbol of the school. Old Main is one of the five “castles” built in the 1890s at the major Illinois state colleges. The others are at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, and Southern Illinois University. Governor John Peter Altgeld was instrumental in funding the Illinois university system, and he was especially fond of the Gothic style.
Also, our castle is the biggst one out of all the Illinois State schools’ castles.
Also, someone once told me that the castles are all facing different directions so that if you put them all together, with the directions they are facing, they will make a really big castle. I don’t know if that is true or not, but that would be cool if it is. It would also take a lot of careful planning.
